Hi Everyone,

I figured I would close out the month with some VERY interesting info I have come across while researching the “Dangers of GMO” post (coming soon!).

Last time I gave you a condiment that enhances fat loss, this tine I am providing info on a condiment we ALL NEED TO AVOID for a myriad of reasons including increased body fat levels and the risk of obesity!

Pure MSG – Obesity in disguise!

MSG (mono sodium glutamate) is added to many foods as a flavor enhancer BUT it has also been identified as the cause or trigger of many severe reactions in the body from migraines to seizures to auto-immune diseases (one of the reasons people stress no MSG in many foods they order in restaurants)

MSG does a body good!

The latest adverse effect attributed to MSG is obesity! The following excerpts are from “Health & Nutrition Secrets that can save your life” – Russell Blaylock, M.D.

“In 1968 Dr. John Olney started conducting experiments on mice using MSG. (Mice are frequently used as test animals because they react most like humans to MSG.) Obsessed with the microscopic changes in the brains of the mice he overlooked something quite dramatic first noticed by his assistant. She pointed out to him that all of the mice were grossly obese. At first he thought it was just a fluke, but as the experiment progressed he noticed that indeed all the mice fed MSG became grossly obese. Since his early observation, other studies have confirmed that MSG causes gross obesity in animals”

Researchers also found that this fat COULD NOT be exercised off and was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to remove through dieting, no matter how astringent. Today, most processed foods contain significant amounts of glutamate. This is extremely important when you consider that, of all the mammals, humans are the most susceptible to physical damage from ingested MSG. We possess a sensitivity five times greater than the mouse and twenty times greater than the rhesus monkey.

So you think your safe because you avoid MSG – here is a list of all the HIDDEN MSG we are consuming (note: it is the glutamate that is the major problem)

The following substances contain the highest percentage of factory created free glutamate, containing 78% MSG ! (AVOID FOODS WHERE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SUBSTANCES APPEAR ON THE LABEL, THEY ARE EXTREMELY FATTENING, ADDICTIVE AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE NEUROLOGICAL REACTIONS) :

MSG Gelatin Calcium Caseinate
Monosodium glutamate Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) Textured Protein
Monopotassium glutamate Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP) Yeast Extract

This next group of substances contain factory created free glutamate in varying amounts. Please note that some food labels list several of these items, which can add up to a considerable and dangerous amount in one product:

After reading the research and the above lists is it any wonder we are one of the fattest, unhealthiest and sickest countries in the world!

Hmmm maybe the MSG in fast food does cause obesity…

We can’t depend on the Government to protect us (What a shock!), twice there has been legislation introduced to protect the Fast Food industry from law suits pertaining to food additives (note: ALL fast food and almost all packaged & processed food has one or more of the above listed forms of glutamate in them!)

The American Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act, also known as the Cheeseburger Bill, sought to protect producers and retailers of foods—such as McDonald’s Corporation—from an increasing number of suits and class action suits by obese consumers. To date these suits have been turned down by the courts, sometimes in strong terms. The Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in March 2004, but did not receive a Senate vote.

The bill was reintroduced in 2005 by Florida Republican Congressman Ric Keller. Keller had taken the maximum level of PAC donations up to $300,000 for his personal campaign funding from restaurants including McDonalds, Wendys and Burger King. On October 19, 2005, it once again passed the House with a 306-120 vote.  although Keller actually missed the vote due to being rushed to the hospital. Once again, it failed to achieve a Senate vote.

There is a way, a VERY SIMPLE WAY to protect yourself  and your family:

DO NOT EAT processed, packaged foods and avoid ALL FAST FOODS!  – Notice on the hidden MSG list there are NO natural foods only man-made, processed crap!!

Cook all your own meals and avoid eating out unless you know the restaurant uses only FRESH, NATURAL and whenever possible ORGANIC ingredients!

I know the truth often hurts but “we literally are what we eat!”

It is sad that we are one of the unhealthiest nations on the planet and we don’t have to be; it just takes some education and common sense. I’m having to watch what my husband and I eat after his heart attack in march 2012. Seems I have to stop eating chicken with the pollo mix rub on it. It has MSG in it. We’ve been eating a lot of it lately and turkey and fish. But I had to look up MSG. And it does affect the joints. Causes gout. So I Wont be eating this. Good chicken but I’ll cook it myself

You are right MSG is some pretty bad stuff as are ALL man-made, unnatural NON-organic additives in food.

It’s the dose that makes the poison. MSG-induced obesity in mice is tried and true, but it’s injected or fed at amounts many orders of magnitude higher than the amounts it’s found in foods readily available to the public on a g/kg basis… amounts so high that the mice sometimes die. The neurotoxic effect is a result of the overabundance of free glutamate causing excitiotoxicity in neurons, yes, but did you know glutamate is actually a naturally occurring, vital excitatory neurotramsnitter as well? IT’S TRUE! Without glutamate, you would die! If you read “nutrition facts” labels, you’ll find that ingredients containing free glutamate are usually at the bottom of the list. This isn’t because the food manufacturers are trying to trick you, it’s because ingredient lists are MANDATED BY LAW to list the ingredients in descending order of the amounts in which they’re found. If glutamate caused all these disorders, we’d already be dead because it’s found in our bodies naturally — in fact breast milk, you know, the stuff you give your babies, contains free and bound glutamate as does every other “naturally occurring” food.

“BUT GLUTAMATE IS DIFFERENT FROM MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE SO EVERYTHING YOU SAID IS WRONG”

No, actually the only difference is a SODIUM ION that binds to the negatively charged deprotonated oxygen of the carboxylic acid moeity on the glutamic acid, so suck a d*ck. In the body (and in your ramen) it’s the same as glutamate and sodium because it dissolves in water.

Seriously, start thinking for yourselves. If you want to be healthier, the solution is simple: STOP EATING SO MUCH AND EXERCISE MORE. I concede that the foods we eat aren’t remarkably healthy, but in most cases the problem is the quantity we eat, not the quality of the food. Everybody’s looking for an excuse to vindicate their crappy diets, but nobody’s doing anything to change.

Thanks for reading the blog! I apologize for the delayed response but I had to prepare for a workshop that I gave this weekend.

Below is the information I found at the Bragg’s website
, unfortunately the original info I found for the blog post does list yeast products, fermented proteins, and some Bragg’s products as having free glutamate. so this a tough question; Bragg products are usually high quality and often organic which means no artificial ingredients like MSG. Although the nutritional yeast is NOT listed as certified organic BUT it does not list any form of glutamate but it may be hidden since yeast products are listed in the original info as having free glutamate. It may be a very small amount of free glutamate occurring naturally BUT everyone has a difference tolerance, so certain people may still be sensitive to minute amounts. If it is the only product you are consuming with free glutamate it may not be a problem, but like I showed in the blog post, it is the combination of free glutamate from multiple foods that can add up to a large enough amount to cause a reaction or create neurological problems. I would try to determine your total free glutamate intake and if you are having any reactions.

Here is the info from the Bragg site that I found:

Bragg derives its primary grown nutritional yeast from pure strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on mixtures of beet and cane molasses in combination of nutrients. Hi Nathan,

Thanks for reading my blog and commenting! A healthy diet that allows for safe, steady fat loss (you don’t want to lose weight, just body fat – read the “Skinny Fat” syndrome post to understand the difference- it is VITAL to your health!) is not that difficult provided you want to makes some simple yet CRUCIAL dietary changes. First, never think “Diet” for diet implies a beginning and end. Diets are only useful in short term situations such athletic contests, photo shoots, and special events. Diets are restrictive, often (but NOT always) unhealthy and often end with a with a rebound weight gain that can result in a higher body fat percentage than when the diet started (think those who starve themselves to get ready for a vacation, pig out while away and come back fatter or athletes that gain weight in the off season and show up to spring training or pre-season camp overweight and have to trim down every year and then blow back up after their season). You want to think a nutrition plan for a long, healthy, disease free life (i.e a long term eating plan you follow forever and modify as you find new, SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND information).

The idea of “well balanced” is horribly distorted and abused in the U.S. today for the “Food Pyramid” is the cause of countless cases of: obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and cancer – here is a post explaining the how & why to AVOID THE FOOD PYRAMID AT ALL COSTS! The best advice I can give you is to use a nutrition plan that has NO processed foods. MSG is found only in unnatural, man made foods that are generally unhealthy to begin with – even though MSG is made from naturally occurring compounds it does NOT occur in nature – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate.

So if you avoid most prepared, canned, boxed foods along with FAST FOODS, microwaved prepared meals, and limit eating out especially at low quality restaurant chains (Mc Donalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC, Subway etc ) you will avoid TONS of MSG. To do this you need to cook your own meals and shop the perimeter of the supermarkets (even better find a local farmer) and buy ONLY foods you can identify by looking at them i.e. FRESH vegetables, fruits, meats, poultry, fish etc and anything you buy in a jar or frozen should ONLY have 5 ingredients or less on the label and you should be able to PRONOUNCE & UNDERSTAND EACH what each ingredients and why it is included.

The SAFEST way to avoid MSG is to buy ORGANICALLY certified foods, for they CANNOT contain ANY MSG (except those with naturally occurring yeast).
As far as balancing out the ratios of protein, fats, and carbs I personally like to use a proper metabolic type diet that assigns the ratios based on your individual genetic ancestry – read the “Metabolic Typing Diet” by William Wolcott. (and then the program needs to be corrected for your specific food intolerances and delayed allergies – we ALL have some!) A “Paleo” or ancestral style of eating follows most of these guidelines and works well for MANY people, for the eating plan has only fresh, (hopefully organic) UNPROCESSED foods that, so there are NO: chemicals, unnatural colorings, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, or MSG. People CANNOT achieve long term , permanent FAT loss and HEALTH eating so-called “modern” foods – you may lose weight and or fat BUT you will not be healthy!! Being thin DOES NOT guarantee FIT or HEALTHY; never use BMI or appearance as a way to solely judge someone’s health! A great website for information is “Mark’s Daily Apple” and you can find tons of Paleo & Ancestral eating books and at Amazon. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty simple – Just eat REAL food and avoid what the Government, AMA, and the media consider healthy!!! If you have more questions, feel free to ask!
